Southern Echo – 28 December 1896 - A SAD CHRISTMAS. On Thursday afternoon Mr. Edward F. Blake held an inquest at the Sir John Barleycorn Inn, Newport, on the body of Henry Hunt, aged 60, a stonemason, in the employ of Mr. T. Jenkins, builder. It appeared from the evidence that on the previous Tuesday deceased suddenly fell down in a fit whilst at work in his employer’s yard. After recovering somewhat, he tried to resume work, but was unable to do so. He was removed home, and early next morning Mr. S. Foster, surgeon, found deceased is a serious condition, suffering from a wound at the back of his head, sustained in the fall. Deceased died at 8.30 on the morning of Christmas Eve, and the medical evidence attributed death to the blow in the head, which in all probability caused compression of the brain and internal haemorrhage.
