A real character. Owned river boats that brought coal across to the Island. Was also a coal trader and brush maker. With Mr Caplin had built the Reform Wharf on Coppins Bridge where the poor could go to purchase cheap coal. Anti Conservative councillor who served from 1832 until his death. - (Brian Greening)
IW TIMES-5 APRIL 1865-THE BURIAL OF MR COUNCILLOR SAMUEL PRING. On Wednesday last the mortal remains of our fellow townsman, Mr Samuel Pring, were consigned to their last resting place in Newport Cemetery. The cortege left the deceased's late residence in High Street at 10 o'clock, and at the Town Hall, the Mayor and Corporation, with others, joined in the procession behind the hearse and mourning coaches, which proceeded to St Thomas Church, and from thence to the burial place, the Rev. G.H.Connor M.A., performing the ceremony. The shops and many of the private houses were partially closed throughout the town during the day.
