St John's National Schools were built in 1842, at a cost of 520GBP, and have been several times enlarged; they are attended by about 260 children. |

A School Board has been formed for that part of the parish outside of Newport. New schools were opened by the Board in 1877, at the cost of about 3000GBP. |
In August 1876, Mr. Seely, M.P., offered 50GBP towards the formation of a free lending library for the parish of Carisbrooke. The offer was accepted by the School Board and the library opened on March 26, 1877. Mr. Seely has since passed 500GBP to Mr. James J. Spickernell, of Carisbrooke, to provide Free Lending Libraries in all rural districts in the island. |
